Edible Landscaping: How Does Thy Garden Grow?
“If Johnny Appleseed were to visit present-day suburbia, he would weep. In most yards, he would be likely to find not a fruit-laden apple tree, but a flowering crabapple, cherry, plum, or peach tree ?- none bearing fruit.” (Rosalind Creasy, 2008) Edible landscaping is the practice of growing food in aesthetically pleasing ways whether in suburbia, dense urban environments or wide open country spaces.
But edible landscaping is more than keeping a kitchen garden, usually a sunny plot with tomatoes, salad greens, a few vegetables and fresh herbs. Edible landscaping replaces messless shrubs and showy flowers with beautiful plants, shrubs and trees that bear edible fruit and nuts and leaves. It also returns unproductive land — our yards — to producing food.
The grande dame of edible landscaping is Rosalind Creasy, author of the 1982 tome The Complete Book of Edible Landscaping which is out of print and sells, used, for $60 and up. Luckily for those of us who live online, Ros is writing for OrganicToBe.org, where her posts are long and detailed.
Excerpt: “I cannot overemphasize the potential for beauty that landscaping with edibles holds, since many people still have difficulty accepting this notion. I came to understand this potential by experimenting in my own yard, in the process relearning the joys of eating fresh-picked peas, vine-ripened tomatoes, and sun-warmed apricots. I purchased dozens of different varieties of vegetables to plant in my food garden but also to interplant in my flower garden. Red cabbage with its colorful foliage, string beans with purple flowers, the many varieties of lettuce with their interesting leaf patterns, artichokes with their gray-green, fernlike foliage and magnificent blue thistles, and the heavenly purple globes of the eggplant were extremely effective in my standard flower bed.” ~ read Creating Bountiful Yards with Organic Edible Landscaping
Excerpt: “I’ve seen it happen time and time again. People who are on a tight budget think they cannot afford to spend a lot of money on the landscaping; so they go to the nursery, buy a package of grass seed, and turn most of their yard into a large lawn. There are few things you can do, particularly in the West, that will cost you more over the long run. A lawn will nickel and dime you to death. Lawn mower, gas for the mower, lawn-mower maintenance, edger, water, sprinkler repairs, fertilizer, herbicides, fungicides, vacation maintenance: all for just a humdrum lawn. And a show-place lawn can cost you many hundreds of dollars a year. A well-maintained lawn needs to be aerated, thatched, reseeded, and top dressed every year. All of those expenses are just the tip of the iceberg. They don’t even take into account that the lawn area could be covered with money-saving plants that would provide food for the table.” ~ read More Food, Less Lawn: Save Money with an Edible Landscaping Plan
What about we bloggers, are we using edible landscapes yet?
“When we bought our house, the back forty (feet, that is) was absolutely disgusting: a flea-infested dirt-pit and dog-toilet, dominated by a sterile avocado tree, a junk fruit tree, a bottlebrush tree, and a badly overgrown magnolia. The avocado was as tall as the house and leaning dangerously, the “fruit” tree produced small cherry-like things that tasted awful, and the bottlebrush was also as tall as the house and sported a canopy at least 20 feet wide.” ~ When Anita and Cameron moved into a new home in the Bay Area, the back yard was a big mess and a top priority. Read about their edible landscaping experiement in Summer in the Garden from Married with Dinner
“Gardening is a great way to help your food budget as well as give you a little exercise in return. My husband has decided to do more edible landscaping and as such, you won’t see very many flowers in my yard or gardening areas. I love them but he wants them to be edible.” ~ Read Garden Pics from Laura Williams’ Musings

Doha’s “Wall”: The World’s First Underground Stadium [Architecture]
When the new “Wall” Stadium set to be built in Doha, Qatar is completed in 2010, it will be the first underground stadium ever constructed. Nicknamed “The Laptop” for obvious reasons, the stadium will have no traditional floodlights. Instead, the lights will be embedded into the architecture, which adds to the clean futuristic look. Apparently, the unique underground design will serve as a natural air conditioning system of sorts, which saves money that could have been spent on a traditional domed, temperature controlled facility.
The Wall is expected to host a number of major soccer events in the future, but with a capacity of only 11,000, I have a hard time believing that will be possible. To be honest, it seems as though the design has taken precedence over common sense here. Why else would you build such a tiny stadium on what is obviously a large piece of real estate? Palin Takes First Direct Shot At Biden
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (AFP) - US Republican vice presidential hopeful Sarah Palin took her first swipe at her Democratic counterpart Saturday, casting Joe Biden as a Washington insider incapable of change.

Sexual assault still earns you a medal for bravery?
Earlier this year, we covered the case of a veteran who - despite raping several girls and women and attempted murder - was still buried with full military honors. It looks like Canada isn’t too far off, where a recent story gives us a middle aged man who is still receiving the Governor General’s Star of Courage award despite pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a teenager:
guy armand raes of airdrie was recently named a recipient of the governor general’s star of courage award. on wednesday, a week after the commercial, raes was in front of a uncultivated court judge pleading delinquent to sexually assaulting a teen he befriended through an rcmp investigation. he will be sentenced next week.
Raes, 50, helped rescue a young couple and guided other residents to safety during a massive row house fire in Airdrie, a residential community just north of Calgary, in August 2005.
The court case has no bearing on Raes’s award, according to the Governor General’s office. “He is being recognized for an act of bravery that happened in 2005,” said Marie-Paule Thorn, spokeswoman for the Governor General’s office.
Now this is obviously a different case than a serial rapist, but it brings up a broader issue about the dismissal of sexual assault and failure to hold people accountable by military and governmental authority.

CNN’s ?Black in America’ erroneously portrayed cause of health disparities says expert
Thomas LaVeist, a health disparities expert at Johns Hopkins is concerned that one of the segments on CNN’s popular series “Black in America” fed into old and “bogus” theories about why blacks are unhealthy compared to whites and other groups.
LaVeist said he was alarmed when he saw the segment touting the pseudo-scientific “salt-sensitivity theory” as a key reason for health disparities among racial groups. “I commend CNN and Soledad O’Brien for tackling this very important topic, but to expose an audience to this theory is very troubling and disappointing,” said LaVeist who is director of the Center for Health Disparities Solutions at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore.
Paging Dr. Gupta
O’Brien made the curious choice to interview Roland Fryer, a Harvard economist, on the health disparity segment. In his comments Fryer reintroduced the discredited cialis acheter salt-sensitive theory as a key reason for the poorer health of blacks. According to the theory, Africans taken as slaves survived transatlantic voyages only if their bodies were predisposed to retain salt. Those survivors, according to the theory, populated the black gene pool with offspring who also maintained salt reserves.
“This bogus theory just won’t seem to die,” said LaVeist. “Even though public health researchers have discredited the theory it continues to be promoted by people who are not knowledgeable about the field. Promoting unproven theories as a key cause of the enormous health gap between African Americans and other ethnic groups will likely widen the gap further.”
“I respect professor Fryer, but quoting an economist as an expert on health disparities is like interviewing me for a story about why gas prices have spiked,” said LaVeist.
Decades worth of research by every major institution concerned with public health has identified viagra kaufen the main reasons that black health lags behind that of whites and other groups:
